THE FLOW OF TIME
In May 2021 Sam Wilde partnered with Zoffany for a second time to debut Fuubutsushi River, under it's commercial name Eastern Palace, as luxury wallcoverings and exquisite interiors fabrics.
With a baccalaureate in natural history and a reverence for the cultural heritage of Japan, Sam’s artwork chronologies the country’s four main islands, sequentially represented by the four seasons.
THROUGH THE SEASONS
The crisp crunch of fresh winter snow underfoot, the sweet scent of budding springtime flowers, the heady buzz of cicadas chirping in the summer’s shade and fallen leaves swirling in an autumnal breeze.
The Japanese word fuubutsushi, marks the anticipation we feel for the changing seasons. It’s the understanding that each precious moment in our lives is fleeting, and each of these changes will bring with them, a new season.
KINGDOMS IN THE STREAM
Each island houses ancient shinto shrines, temples and monuments local to their region, and beside these landmarks sits a rich tapestry of endemic seasonal flora and topiary.
Beneath the islands lay the elusive giant catfish, giant salamander, samurai crab and stone turtle. Immortalised as giant kami keeping a watchful eye over their sleepy surroundings.
